Actual size, drawn to scale

Every size below is drawn at the same scale, so the shapes are true relative to each other. The grey bar at the bottom is a 6 ft person for reference.

Visual reference only — fonts and colours are approximate and this is not an artwork proof. BoatMat prepares a professional proof after the order is placed, and nothing goes into production until it is approved.

Other lines

HD DigiPrint backgrounds: Navy, Light Gray, Charcoal Gray, Black, Tan, or a custom colour.
Plain Sunbrella boarding mats: Black, Navy, Gray, Tan — in stock, ships fast.
Embroidery thread: N1 Navy · O6 Black · M9 Light/Soft Gray · O8 Charcoal Gray · E1 Dark Brown · B2/B3 Gold · F3 Tan. Anything outside these is +$35 per mat.

Embroidery fonts

Six standard fonts — Block, Script, Sport, Naval, Brush and Russ — are included in the mat price. A custom logo or supplied artwork adds a one-time $150 digitizing fee.

Two things to be careful about

A professional artwork proof is included free — but BoatMat does not provide proofs or mock-ups before an order is placed. Never promise one. And never quote a lead time or confirm stock without checking with Patrick first.

The two numbers that win the argument

Do not say “106 ounces versus 20 ounces.” That total adds the backing to the face, while every competitor quotes face weight alone — and published competitor face weights go as high as 54 oz. If a captain finds that mat, every other claim you made is in doubt.
40 ozBoatMat FACE — the carpet you walk on. Competitors publish 17, 20, 24, 30 oz.
66 ozAquaLoc® PVC BACKING, poured on. Most competitors publish no backing figure at all.
Lifetimebuy-back on the backing. The longest published competitor warranty in this market is 8 years.
Say it like this:

“There are two numbers on a mat and most companies publish neither. The first is the face — the carpet you walk on. Ours is 40 ounces per square yard. The mats you’re comparing to publish 17, 20, 24 or 30. The second is the backing, and that’s where the real difference is. Ours is 66 ounces of PVC poured on — the AquaLoc system. Theirs is rubber brushed on, and most won’t publish a number at all. That’s why we put a lifetime buy-back on the backing and nobody else here publishes longer than eight years.”

Every figure above is verifiable and cannot be walked back. Madeira Polyneon thread, UV-stabilised American polypropylene binding, 100% USA materials, handcrafted in Fort Lauderdale since 1995 — 31 years, 39+ builders.

The five you will actually hear

Tap to open. These come from a survey of 83 competitors, 52 with published prices.

“Why is this $215 when I found the same mat online for $88?”

You will hear this more than everything else combined.

“The $88 one is The Custom Captain — their own page says ‘20 oz. loop carpet with a black rubber tread backing,’ and their care instructions tell you to buy Scotch Guard and treat it yourself.

The $125 one is Matworks, in Georgia. They publish no carpet weight at all — and their own ‘SuperHeavy’ upsell tells you the standard mat is thin. They also publish a 4–6 week lead time.

The $99 one is American Floor Mats. Their ‘Personalized Boat Mats’ price list is character-for-character identical to their generic office-lobby mat list. Same $9.75 a square foot. It’s the same mat with a different page title.

If you found it on Amazon or Etsy, pull the listing up — the best-looking one says in its own description: ‘do not expose to direct sunlight or excessive moisture.’ That’s a porch rug being sold as a boat mat.”

Then close on the right frame: “What’s the boat, and where does the mat go? If it’s a dock head or a big cockpit, I’ll show you something where we’re actually cheaper than the industry standard.”

“Canvas Designers told me lead shot is better than sandbags.”

Legitimate technical point — do not bluff it. You’ll hear it in Palm Beach, Jupiter and north Broward.

“They’re right that lead is denser than sand — that’s physics, and it’s fair about drape. Two things against it.

Price: they charge $290 for an embroidered 24×30 and $385 for a 30×36. Ours is $199.95 at 20″ and $229.95 at 30″. You’re paying 26–67% more for the shot.

Sizes: they make exactly two. If your gate is 40 or 60 inches, they don’t have it. We go 10 to 72.

And ask what’s under the fabric. They call it an ‘exclusive non-skid backing’ but publish no weight, composition or warranty. The weight in the pocket stops it blowing off the dock. The backing is what keeps it working in five years.”
Escalate: ask Pat whether a lead-shot option is worth offering as an upgrade. OBA Canvas also uses sand, so BoatMat isn’t uniquely exposed — but only Canvas Designers is actively marketing against it.
“I’ll just SeaDek the whole deck — it’s cheaper per square foot.”
“On raw material they are cheaper — a SeaDek sheet is about $8 a square foot. But that’s not the comparison. Foam is a project, not a purchase: Marine Mat cockpit kits start at $985 and run to $1,455; a GatorStep kit is $1,850; SeaDek’s own directory quotes installed work from $500 to $30,000+.

And it’s glued down with 3M pressure-sensitive adhesive. It doesn’t come up cleanly, can’t move to your next boat, and it’s a conversation at resale. Their own installers publish five to seven years — ours has a lifetime buy-back on the backing.

Foam also can’t drape over a gunwale, can’t go on a dock, can’t go in a stateroom, can’t be pulled up for a charter — and can’t be embroidered. If you want the vessel’s name underfoot, foam is not the product.”

If they’re set on foam: “Honestly, do it — CNC fit on a fixed deck is good. Then let me do your boarding mat and your dock mat, because SeaDek doesn’t make either.”

“$150 just to set up my logo? Others charge $75 or nothing.”

This one is genuinely exposed. Reframe it, don’t oversell it.

“That $150 is one time, forever — it’s turning your artwork into a stitch file, a real digitizing job, not a print. allMATS quotes $100–$150 for the same work.

The number that matters is mat number two. Newport Yacht Gear charges $65 extra per mat for a custom logo — every mat, forever. On one mat they’re cheaper. On the third, we are. On a fleet it isn’t close.

And the six standard fonts are included — if your boat name in one of those works, there’s no fee at all.”
Escalate, do not improvise: (1) on a printed DigiPrint mat there is no stitch file, so the $150 is hard to defend — Mat Supplier Group and Ultimate Mats both advertise no setup fees. Ask Pat whether it can be waived or folded into DigiPrint pricing. (2) BoatMat’s sister brand Best Logo Mats advertises “$0 setup fees”. If a customer finds both sites, that needs an answer that doesn’t come from you on the spot.
“Can you get it to me before the show / the charter?”
Get the real lead time from Pat before your first call. BoatMat’s actual turnaround is not published anywhere. The script below assumes it beats two weeks — if it doesn’t, this is a weakness, not a strength. Never quote a date yourself.
“Matworks publishes four to six weeks on their own site. Boater’s Catalog in Pinellas publishes four to six weeks. Order from Georgia today and you may not have it for the show.

We’re on 31st Street. I can walk a sample to your boat this afternoon and take the measurement myself so it actually fits the gate — you’re not guessing off a web form.”

On DeckGuard, the strongest version:

“The smallest Trimaco roll at 36 inches is 186 feet for $519. If your job is 60 feet you pay $519 and throw away two-thirds of a roll. We bill by the running foot — 60 feet is $216. Break-even against their minimum roll is 144 feet. NAVSEA-certified either way.”
“We’re doing twenty slips and the clubhouse — what’s my volume price?”

Do not invent a discount, and do not quote list on a twenty-mat order. BoatMat has no published volume schedule; every competitor does — Ultimate Mats drops a 4×6 from $446 to $273 at 26+.

“That’s exactly the kind of order I want. Let me get you a proper multi-unit number rather than the single-mat price — give me until tomorrow.”

Then call Pat. Getting a fleet/marina volume schedule built before FLIBS is the highest-value internal ask in the research — these are the reordering accounts your 10% recurring commission depends on.
